Equipment Guide

Team Uniform

Provided by Somerville Baseball Inc. In the spring, all players will receive a team jersey, pants, hat, and socks. During the fall season, players will receive a team jersey and hat. Team uniforms will be distributed to the team prior to Opening Day festivities.

Glove

Baseball gloves are required and should be at both practices and games.  Avoid buying an oversized glove. Beginners should stick to a smaller glove for additional control.  It does take time to break in your new glove.  No matter what you do, most will agree that the most effective way to break in a baseball glove is by using it.  Most gloves have the pre-measured size stamped inside where the pocket is.

Below are general sizes:

Tee-Ball  9-10
Infield 10 - 11.75
Pitcher 11.5 - 12.25
Outfield 11.5 - 12.25

Batting Gloves

Batting gloves are optional and a personal preference of the player.

Cleats

Baseball cleats are required and is arguably the most important baseball item you can buy your child. If you want your child to truly learn and enjoy any sport as well as avoid injury, you will go out of your way to purchase them appropriate shoes. Cleats with metal spikes are not permitted. Shoes with molded cleats are permissible. It is best to avoid soccer cleats if possible.

Batting Helmet

The league does have the ability to provide helmets if needed, however, it is recommended that each player purchase their own.  Faceguards are permitted.

Athletic Supporters

All male players must wear an Athletic Supporter for their protection.

Long Sleeve Under Jersey Shirt

Long sleeve shirts are optional and the parents choice.  These keep the player warm for any of those cold spring weather games. Keep in mind, especially at the older levels, long sleeve under shirts should not be white as the umpire may require it be removed by any player that is put is as a pitcher.

Baseball Bat

SBI is following the updated USA bat standard instituted by USA youth baseball in 2017 for 2018 season. In order to ensure the safety of our children the new labeled “USA” baseball bats will be required by all participants (except tball).

• SBI will provide USA standard bats: each team will have these bats available to use during games and practices
• If you decide to use your own bats they must be labeled with the “USA baseball” label
• If you have purchased a bat that does not have this USA label it cannot be used during SBI games or practices.
* Bats should not be wider than 2 5/8"

The new standard ensures bats act like a “wood bat” which has less “bounce” which will be safer for fielders and pitchers. Safety is our #1 concern!!

For more information on USA bat standards please see our buying guide

Baseballs

Baseballs for each respective league are provided by Somerville Baseball Inc.

Catcher's Gear

Catchers must wear approved long or short model chest protectors. All catchers must wear chest protectors with the neck collar, throat guard, shin guards and catcher's helmet, all of which must meet Little League specifications and standards. All catchers must wear a mask, “dangling” type throat protector and catcher's helmet during infield/outfield practice, pitcher warm-up and games. Somerville Baseball Inc provides catcher's gear, but children are permitted to use their own as long as they meet the standard specifications.
